THE BIKINI HOTEL
THE BIKINI HOTEL The world’s first bikini was designed by a French car engineer, Louis Réard. The bikini was launched on 5 July 1946 at the Molitor in Paris. The French designer was unable to persuade any models to wear his bikini, so he hired Micheline Bernadini, a naked dancer, to wear the bikini at the launch – see above photo. For her efforts, she received 50,000 fan letters, mainly from men. Louis Réard called his navel-revealing swimwear the bikini after the Bikini Atoll, a South Pacific island, where, four days earlier, the United States held its first peace-time nuclear weapons test. The designer said the bikini “reveals everything about a girl except for her mother's maiden name”. The bikini soon became popular in France, though it was not until the 1950s and 1960s that the bikini caught on elsewhere. In 1951 bikinis were banned from the Miss World contest. The swimsuit was declared sinful by the Vatican and even banned in many places (eg Italy, Spain, Australia, several American states and even parts of France). In 1957, one fashion magazine wrote, “it is hardly necessary to waste words over the so-called bikini since it is inconceivable that any girl with tact and decency would ever wear such a thing”. However, many famous actresses were widely seen wearing a bikini, most notably Brigitte Bardot in the 1956 film And God Created Woman and Ursula Andress in the 1962 Dr. No film. By the end of the twentieth century, the bikini had become the world’s most popular beachwear, though one survey found that 85 per cent of bikinis have never touched water. In 2006, Susan Rosen designed the world's most expensive bikini. The bikini contained 150 carats of diamond and was valued at £20 million. Louis Réard chose the Molitor for the launch of the bikini because the art deco establishment was very fashionable, especially by the rich wanting to enjoy topless sunbathing. The Piscine Molitor was opened in 1929 by the Olympic swimmers Aileen Riggin Soule and Johnny Weissmuller, who later played Tarzan. In 1989 it was closed down and lay derelict until its opening as a luxury hotel and club earlier this year. The hotel’s lobby displays Eric Cantona’s Rolls Royce. Named after the hotel’s lido, Piscine Molitor Patel is the main character in the Yann Martel’s, Life of Pi, which was later turned into a film. In the book, the lido was described as “the pool the gods would have delighted to swim in”. What swimwear do you like wearing? What beachwear do you like wearing? Below are photos of Molitor’s lido before and after its recent makeover. |

Thanks for the history lesson, and the shot of bikini #1 – quite skimpy!! I don't have specific swim and beach wear – I'm a guy after all! - though my favorite would be nothing of course. Happy HNW. Happy HNW, spunky....Beach wear and swimwear are the same, a speedo, but I have no beach near by, so it usually just gets worn at hotel swim pools!

I can't lie out on the beach and sunbathe like I used too. T-shirt & swim shorts for beaching.

I haven't worn a 'bikini' since my top fell off 45 years ago! I try to find something flattering but not too revealing. Beach wear and swim wear are the same for me.... and you'll mostly find me in the water. Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

I never swim publicly, only in private pools and I only go to beaches to walk barefoot on the sand. It's why my skin is so youthful, I don't expose it to lots of sun and saltwater. I love the pre-makeover graffiti on the Molitor but the makeover looks nice, even though I think Juliet style balconettes on the suites would have been a lovely touch.

It sounds as if you look amazing in a bikini. Thanks for stopping by.

A lot of my swimwear stuff in my drawer doesn't fit me now. A clearout, especially of the Speedos, is needed.

Thanks. You have covered all the essentials for a beach visit.

The history of the bikini mirrors the history of women's rights to a certain extent. Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for your kind words. This was one of the blogs that turned out very differently than how it was planned because of my internet surfing.

I only have one-pece swimwear!

Beach/Pool wear is just skin when I can get away with it. Otherwise the scimpiest Speedo type style I can find. I have worn a Thong suit on the beach in Florida. If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin." I always behave. Preferably not well.
