270
270 In order to become president of the United States, a candidate must win more than half of the votes in the Electoral College (currently that would be 270 of the 538 total electors). If no candidate wins a majority of electoral votes, the 12th Amendment to the Constitution provides for Presidential election by the House of Representatives with each State delegation receiving one vote. Twice in our history, the House of Representatives has chosen the President -- Thomas Jefferson's election in 1801 and John Quincy Adams' election in 1825. |
