Today Is World Suicide Prevention Day

Observed on September 10th, every year, World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) provides the opportunity for people, across the globe, to raise awareness of suicide and suicide prevention.

Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for people of all ages. It is responsible for over 800,000 deaths, which equates to one suicide every 40 seconds. Every life lost represents someone’s partner, , parent, friend or colleague.

Preventing suicide is often possible and you are a key player in its prevention!

Learn the symptoms of mental illness, and how to handle them in your loved ones. Talk with your friends or family who may be suffering from a mental illness. Sometimes a simple check-in is all it takes to set a sufferer of mental illness on the right path to seek treatment.

We are all in this together and can play a part in preventing another loss of life.

Talking to your loved ones about mental illness may be a daunting task, especially if you are unfamiliar with the subject. If you suspect that someone you know is considering suicide or otherwise harming themselves, seek professional help right away and don't leave them alone.

I once had a client threaten suicide when they were about to be evicted. It was one of the scariest experiences of my career. Fortunately, the authorities on-site diffused the situation and called me back to assure me the client was “OK”.

This is a very important day, as it should be remembered every day as there are so many suffering out there from all kinds of things that ail them. And if you can help someone by talking to them or just encouraging them to talk to someone who is a professional then we should all do that.

Happy Thursday hun, I hope your day has been treating you well..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

Excellent post McLady, thank you!

One of the biggest killers of men between the ages of 40 to 55. There's still a huge obstacle in the way of effective treatment and that's the stigma associated with mental illness, and particularly for men and our macho ways.

Suicide is such a devastating trauma. The despair of the poor person in the lead up to it is unimaginable. And the way it rips lives apart in the aftermath is horrific. Anything that can be done to mitigate this awful blight can only be good.

Again, thank you for posting.

Sadly, it often comes as a surprise to those who are closest that a family member or friend has committed suicide. We're coming up on the 5th anniversary of my sister-in-laws suicide and we continue to struggle with the question...why?

Thanks for this one sexyldy. Reach out and ask someone if they're doing okay today people.

Communication and being aware when others are struggling will help a lot of people. Friends and family have to be prepared to take action.

Thank you for your supportive words. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of stigma about mental illness which can affect people of all ages. Awareness and communication are keys to helping others with their struggles.

Thank you. I knew some people would be uncomfortable with the subject and felt helping creating awareness was more important.

My ex once threatened to do harm to himself while on the phone with me. Regardless of our differences, I knew action had to be taken so I did. I don't regret it.
