I often eat breakfast on Saturday at a small café in a town near my ranch. Lots of us regulars know each other and the staff and owner know us all and BS with us all the time. This Saturday was no exception. I came in grabbed my regular table in the corner placed my order and leaned back to read.
I was reading a selection of short stories by Guy de Maupassant. He was a French author and essayist in the 1880's. He was born in 1850 and died in 1893 of complications of syphilis. In my neck of the woods he is not well known... to say the least.
I was about 1/2 way through a story called "Happiness" when a feminine voice said next to me... "oh, that's a good one...".
I turned to find a moderately attractive but well worn 30's something woman looking at my book. She was there with her two and her husband. They were dressed in their farm work clothes and, at about 8:30am, had already been hard at chores for some time.
I replied to her statement; "Yes, it is..."
She smiled an almost wistful smile and then said, "But it's better in French."
I know I raised an eyebrow as I explained to her that my high school French had long since deserted me. She laughed and explained that she had studied abroad in France, come back to the states, met Ben... the quiet, solid, man of the earth now sitting at the table with her. She had moved to the farm, left her books, and culture behind and was happier than she had ever been.
Sometimes my friends... life imitates art... if you wonder why I say that, read the story. Above all, be happy mes amies!!

Back In the Saddle Again

Back Again…
So I find myself back here again among my "fun" electronic friends. I left because someone on a job site "had a friend" who saw me. He made an implied threat of telling senior management and getting my contract terminated… so I left the site. By the time that contract was over… I was in a relationship with a woman who was a tad possessive, so I decided not to get back on.
Now that the relationship has run its course, I find myself unencumbered and decided to touch base with old friends. Some of you have left the site and moved on to other adventures, some are still on but have gone through significant life changes, and some… well some folks have somehow managed to stay to their trail at a nice easy walk. (good for you all…)
To all of you "old" friends and my potential new friends… I say "how do".

I just don't get it...
I'm a good looking guy, I have no romantic entanglements, I have money, an education, I know how to please a woman, I'm a gentleman in public. I've been told I'm the complete package...
So why the fuck can't I get a woman to give me the time of day on here. Is it because the picture I have on here is really me, and I don't have time between work and my ranch to get six pack abs? I'm at a loss right now and am turning to you folks in blog land for help and advice. When I send an e-mail I send a thoughtful e-mail with observations from the woman's profile to show I read it and respect what she wrote. I won't lie - I won't put up fake pictures... but how do I get a woman to give me the time of day on here?
Somebody please explain this to me...

Wow, has it really been a month since I last posted something on here? Boy howdy, time flies when you are working like a mad man.
I have finished up the last of my contract work in New Orleans and Tuesday (November 24th) is my last day. To the ladies I met in NOLA, you were wonderful and I enjoyed meeting all y’all. To those who I didn’t get to meet or who choose not to meet me, you never know what life has in store for us in the long run. Who knows, maybe the stars will align the next time ‘round. I wish all y’all the best and I am a better man for having known you, whether it just be via e-mails and IM’s or via a much more personal connection.
Projects on the farm are winding down and the holiday stuff has started. 26 people coming over for Thanksgiving. (including a few folks who have no one to spend the holiday with…) I’ve been adding a bathroom to the “bunkhouse” I built for the last year… so now they have running water, heat, and “facilities” where they will be staying.
I sold two horses in the last 5 weeks and got another one. He’s a big, 17 hand, roan gelding who likes getting his own way. I got him for a song, because the fella I got him from said he couldn’t be trained. Well, it took some time, but I have him bridle broke and he is comfortable with a saddle on. Next step is for me to get on him and see how that goes. I’m going to hold off on that until after Thanksgiving just in case he throws me and I break something. Wouldn’t want to spend the holiday in the hospital and miss out on all that good food and camaraderie.
I hope to get time in the next month to work out a little bit more. It would be nice to get into better shape for the New Year and firm things up a little. Don’t know where I will be headed next, but I will update my profile and post it in my blog as soon as I know.

A long, lonely, dusty trail…

It’s been a very long and hard seven or so days for me.
Last weekend I got a phone call from an old buddy of mine from the Corps saying that a mutual friend who had just retired from the USMC after 32 years had passed away. To understand this better you have to realize my friend had been an NCO, was 53 years old and was in fantastic shape. He ran six miles every day and could put much younger men to shame with his physical condition. He passed away while mowing his lawn due to a massive coronary.
So, I went up to Iowa last Wednesday to meet a bunch of other old war horses, tell stories, get a little drunk, and carry the casket of a friend who I had shared some of the best and worst times of my life with. I then got to meet, try and comfort, and help as best I could his 30 something amazing wife and two little who would no longer have a daddy. It was a draining experience that I don’t know that I’ll completely get over any time soon.
Then I went to see my older very unhealthy sister, she is about 100 pounds overweight and smokes heavily. And my younger health nut sister. It’s never fun when I visit because I am usually end up referring between the two of them as they criticize each other’s life styles and choices. I got home Saturday in time to do all the chores that no one else could be bothered with and then got up at 3am to catch a flight on Monday morning (yes even though it was a holiday…) and got to work by noon.
On top of that, I still have not enjoyed the company of a woman since before last Christmas and I am starting to get a LOT cranky. Otherwise… life is just Jim Fucking Dandy!!!

When I left the office this evening, it was raining. Not hard, but enough to want to use an umbrella. As I started walking to my rental car, I saw a young, attractive woman coming out of the office across the street. She had a disgusted look on her face as she put her purse over her head and started down the street.
I walked over to her and asked her if she would like to share my umbrella. It's a small one that you tuck into a briefcase so we had to kind of tuck in kind of close to stay out of the rain. As it was, since I wanted her to stay as dry as possible, I kind of stayed out in the rain. We walked to her car and I held the door and the umbrella over her as she got in the car. I suggested that maybe we could go and grab a drink and get to know each other. She just smiled and said that she didn't think her boyfriend would be ok with that. Then she surprised me by getting out of the car and kissing me on the cheek. She said thank you and then got back in her car and drove away.
I could be disappointed by the outcome of this encounter, but I'm not. I didn't offer the help to score... I did it to help her out and be a gentleman. The kiss on the cheek was just a bonus!

I happened across a TV show tonight called “Catfish” I don’t tend to watch MTV a lot but the show was interesting and kind of hit home since I am involved on this web site. It catches people who are not honest with their “dating” profiles and introduces their real selves to the person they have been lying to.
I have noted that some folks on here are less than honest with their photos etc… How do I know you ask? Well, either there are a number of male models on this site who have posed on some beefcake calendars that I have seen, or they are using photos they copied off the internet.
It makes me wonder how many profiles have at least something that is not quite the truth. I have been very honest with my profile… maybe that’s why I don’t get a ton of contacts from women. It seems that if I were to be less than honest, if / when I were to meet a woman I contacted on here, how would I explain the discrepancies? To me it just seems to be easier to be honest about things.
What do you think? How honest are you on your profile?
