Choosing A Relationship

He picked up her wine glass and filled it partway.

She accepted the glass from him, took a sip and then set it down. “We need t.o talk.”

“Really? About what?” he asked.

“About this,” she replied, pointing back and forth t.o each of them. She felt impatient with her own inability t.o express herself.

“What about it?” he cocked his head, his tone gentle, not challenging.

“Are we trying t.o have some kind of relationship?” She could barely catch her breath yet had t.o continue, “We aren’t young anymore. Life is complicated.”

“I hear you,” he commented as he sipped his wine. “We are adults. We have jobs, responsibilities and commitments.”

“What are you looking for? Is it just some kind of an affair?”

“No,” he answered quietly while setting down his wine glass. ”That is not what I want.”

“O.K. Then what do you want?”.

“Something real. Something serious. Something that lasts,” he responded very deliberately.

She sat still, barely able t.o breathe. She had been putting off having this conversation for a while. However, she knew she had needed t.o hear his answer, yet this was the one she feared the most.

“I have t.o be honest with you. I don’t have all the answers right now but I am trying t.o figure this out. I didn’t know I wanted anything like this. At least, not until I met you.” His dark eyes looked deep into hers. “If you really want t.o know what I want, it’s a chance with you.”

“What? Really? But……”, she stammered.

“What I know so far is that I really like you. I like how honest you are. I like how smart you are. I like how passionate you are about things other than yourself.”

He leaned over, staring at her through the candlelight, taking her soft hand in his. “I don’t expect this t.o be easy. But I think there is something unmistakable between us.”

She blinked in disbelief.

“Why not take a chance, on us?”

She knew then, this was exactly what she wanted and was willing t.o see where it would lead.

Many factors can impact the decision to be in a relationship. People can also have different definitions of what a relationship is. How have you made the choice?

Accepting those flaws and mistakes and sarcasm — is a worthy challenge.
As long as the sex is good, who cares about all that other stuff?

We're ALL into the ephemeral. ❗❗😎

I have been in a serious relationship. I have been married. Now I am happy in my life.
The marriage was when young. I felt that was what was expected of me; it was the flow of life. School, college, date, marry, have children, retire, ...ultimately die. This was the societal view of one's life course. So, I tended to seek out women that I envisioned I could love for life and marry. Of course, much of that path was in fact what I followed. But then I divorced. I stayed single and absolutely LOVED the freedom that I regained from my pre-marriage years. I did enter a relationship that I planned on being a fwb. I really wanted the friendship part, not just the sex. I didn't want the part where my every whereabouts was questioned or needed to be known. I wanted to keep the freedom of waking up and deciding for myself what I would do that day. The relationship developed into something much more serious, without my consent. I ultimately broke it off. Today, I would be happy to have a female companion to spend time with, have sex with, share vacations with. But, I will opt for staying single if I can't have that. I won't allow myself to be led into a relationship equal to marriage. That does disqualify me from many of the women here. I could be a great friend, but I don't see that happening.

Taking chances is what life is all about and I hope she continues to take that chance at happiness as I think they both deserve to see where it goes.

I hope you have a great Hump Day my friend..

People can also have different definitions of what a relationship is.

I have to disagree with this. Respectfully of course.

There is an English language definition of the word "relationship". In a general sense it refers to "a connection, association, or involvement". Meaning that you sl1000 (or any other blogger here) and I already have a relationship via our association, or involvement here on the blogs. It would be further defined as a blogging relationship. e interact therefore we have a relationship

If 2, or more , people have a one time sexual encounter (a.k.a. one night stand) they have had a . . . relationship. Yes it was brief, yes it was only sexual, BUT it was still a . . . relationship. They interacted together.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Relationships are different for many of us. Now in my life, I do not want to get married any time soon but I do want some one in my life to go on vacation with, and so forth. I think both here deserves a chance at happiness and I hope it ends well for them.

May the light bring peace into your life.

Many people want more than just good sex. For example, if all I wanted was just to 'get off', I can do that without anyone else's help.

I have read that many 'older' adults are opting for the type of relationship you describe....all the perceived benefits while maintaining separate residences and independence. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience and expectations.

Life is about taking chances when you weigh the risks. I think she is conflicted and needed to get it out in the open as to what his expectations are.

Perhaps instead of using the word 'definition', I could have used 'expectations' for the scenario described. In this case, it was clear she was not looking for a one-night stand.

Good question. In this instance, although she was hesitant, it was her wish turning into reality.

To be honest, I feel like I barely fly by the seat of my pants. And I mean at all times, when I'm talking to someone, when I'm dating, when they move in, in my experiences, I feel like it's all out of control and it just happens. Which is not the way to have a healthy relationship.

Reading this blog made me think about how someone really wants something so enthusiastically that they just "know"

This is one of the many things I'm working on for myself.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I agree, that when something feels 'right' it is. We have to trust ourselves to find the balance between but our hed tells us and what our heart feels.
