Symposim 29 Hotel. Fire of Life

There’ was a hotel just a few miles across the border, a place that women came. It was dirty, mean, smelled of blood, urine. The women who visited were dressed well. Usually they came alone. Sometimes accompanied by a man. They would drive up in taxis, step out, look around as if they must be mistaken, checking the paper in their hand. Some got back into the cars. Most didn’t.

The traffic in and out of the hotel was slow but steady. Few decided to stay the night. There is no pool, no restaurant, no concierge. Look, it is barely standing. Indeed, there is nothing in the village that speaks of comfort. A bar, a bodega, a scattering of houses in varying states of decay.

Ah, but wait, at the far end, set back from everything else, a grand hacienda, a Granja, with horses roaming a meadow. Many times the taxis drive first to this place, only to be redirected.

The women who visit the hotel, they need the arm of someone to help them back into the taxi as they leave. If they come with someone, they may leave supported but en lagrimas.

No one says anything to the women. Unacknowledged, they do not exist. Shadows.

The fires on Friday empty the tiny village. They are never lit until the sun is down, until the hotel closes. The villagers drift out, finding a place to sit upwind together, sharing food, singing, chanting until the smoke is a memory and the skies run clear. The , freed during the fire, wave bright trailing ribbons in long circles over their heads. The horses in the meadow raise their heads, scenting the smoke.

It is difficult, no? To cull the sacred from the profane.

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

sadly, this may be true. planed parenthood provides about half of the abortions nationwide in the US. the number of abortions having dropped steadily from 1990 to the present day (about 50.

It sure does look like a hotel just over the border into Mexico. A very interesting story hugs V

my first abortion was in Canada, it was still illegal in US and mexico was too far away. the site was a two room storefront. I nearly bled out on my trip home.

En lagrimas...
there are few less futile feeling times than when a woman needs to visit one of these places in order to keep her sanity, and her choice over whether or not she breeds...

I am lucky that I am in the United States and have a choice... for now.
I am lucky to be in a state where we talk about choice and the majority of us still believe in that choice.

Thank you for your symposium offering.
I am no longer participating in it.

The last hotel I stayed in had lots of women coming and going. From my balcony it made for initially entertaining but then distressing viewing as it was obvious the Gambian women were earning a little money for lots of sex.

Canada also has choices and I thank god for that as well.I believe it is a woman's right to make that choice without government having any kind of say what she can or can not do to her body. Her body belongs to no one but herself.I think governments need to stay out of it.. Beautiful piece for the Symposium my friend.

One can never have enough JOY in their life...

Very well done! .

That's what it's like when the government ( or religion ) decides they know best.

Upwind from the fires... yes.

I can imagine what it would feel like to know and not say. to be part of and not sanction.

the Granja becomes the devil's home. the hotel, merely a place a utter desperation

Minimum wording, maximum meaning, as expected from wicked. Fortunately or not, for everything that may be "not allowed", anywhere in the world, there is a black market for it. Obviously, having the choice, makes it legal and as such, at least, safe.

women will always know where to go.

what makes it wrong is when it is done in places that are mean, dirty and degrading.

Hmmm could this portend for this country if the current administration has it's way?

oh, I see it already. no money for planned parenthood. fewer clinics, no money in healthcare coverage for that service.......

This is heartbreaking, wicked. I've been to a couple of those places, and I never thought we'd be back in that situation again.

I know kzoo. but then who'd think we'd take meals away from our elders? shut down our national parks? turn clean water dirty? back out on treaties?

it's a helluva world we're living in friend.

It is hard to be a woman.

Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale
Her infinite variety. Other women cloy
The appetites they feed, but she makes hungry
Where most she satisfies. For vilest things
Become themselves in her, that the holy priests
Bless her when she is riggish. ~~ from Antony & Cleopatra

I'm not participating because A ) the topic didn't excite and B ) I'm in the midst of trying to get other things done to start working on my degree, again.
Honestly, I pared down my watch list, and am preparing for only being on the site about 3 X a week.

You pose an interesting topic not only on choices but the safety of those choices, well done! I truly enjoy reading you!
